McHENRY – Last year, Ben Spengel, now 12, decided he wanted to compete in a track meet.

He knew his cerebral palsy, which requires him to use a walker or crutches to get around, might hinder those efforts. So, he approached Mayor Sue Low with the idea of hosting an assisted walk competition for children like himself.

Low was receptive and helped get things off the ground last summer.

Now the event, which is held in conjunction with Fiesta Day’s Open Track Meet, is entering its second year.

It’s open to anyone who uses a walker, a cane, crutches or a non-motorized wheelchair to get around and includes four events – the 25-meter race, the 100-meter relay, the softball throw and the long jump.

Although just one other person, a girl, participated with Spengel last year, Spengel said he was hopeful others would join in this summer.

“I’m really excited about the event because I can’t wait to see how many people show up,” he said.

His mom, Trish Spengel, said Ben had been training by swimming, climbing stairs and walking.

“We’re very excited about this because we think we’ll have a lot more participation,” she said. “Word’s gotten out about it.”

The event, which is open to those 6 to 14 years old, will be Wednesday at McCracken Field.

Pattie Lunkenheimer, athletic program coordinator for the McHenry Parks and Recreation Department, said the track meet was an important part of Fiesta Days.

“You can incorporate all types of children, whether they have a disability or not,” she said. “And I think it gives children an understanding of how it’s difficult for some.”
