Parade shock

To the Editor:

On July 4, while attending the annual Spring Grove parade, my family was almost run over by an unattended red tractor.

We were situated about 150 yards west of Main Street and Winn Road on the south side viewing the parade. Toward the end, a tractor turned east onto Main. He was pulling a hay wagon with people throwing the goodies to the kids. As he rounded the turn, for some unknown reason, the operator jumped off the tractor with the wheels still turning.

This now uncontrolled tractor headed toward my wife, 3-year-old and me. My wife momentarily froze. I yelled for her to grab my son and move to the right, while I moved to the left.

The operator jumped back on the tractor inches away from where our chairs were. This was witnessed by at least 50 parade watchers. Now that the shock of the moment has worn, I think this individual needs to be identified and cited for reckless behavior.

The ironic part is that a woman who was with this entourage offered us a Christmas stocking with a bottle of water in it for almost getting killed.
