Detour: Expect delays on Route 47

By KEVIN P. CRAVER - kcraver@nwherald.com

ROUTE 47: Route 47 is posted as a detour for Route 23, which is closed between Harvard and Marengo. Unfortunately, the detour is in need of a detour because the state decided to have work done on both roads simultaneously.

Road work that recently started on Route 47 north of Route 176 is snarling traffic. Expect delays of 10 to 15 minutes, and longer during peak travel hours. Alternate routes to bypass Route 47 south of Woodstock include Dean Street to the west, and Mount Thabor/Doty roads to the east.

Resurfacing work on Route 47 could be finished by next month, and Route 23 is expected to be opened by November.

Watch out for road work on South and Calhoun streets in Woodstock, as well.

South Street between Tara and Moraine drives will be resurfaced, and workers will improve its sidewalks, curbs, gutters and storm sewers.

Calhoun Street will be repaved from west of Seminary Avenue to Route 47. Workers will improve sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and replace frames and grates. Work will wrap up in October.

VIRGINIA ROAD: Virginia Road between Rakow Road and Route 31 will be closed to traffic until November as Waste Management makes improvements to its transfer facility. A detour is posted, but access to local businesses on Virginia Road will be maintained.

SPRING GROVE: Blivin Street will be closed at the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad crossing from Monday to Friday during track replacement. Through traffic will be detoured via Wilmot Road.

HALIGUS ROAD: Haligus Road, including its bike paths, is closed from Miller Road south to Geneva Lane. A detour is posted taking drivers through Miller, Lakewood and Reed roads. People visiting the Lake in the Hills Bark Park and the Public Works building still will have access through the construction zone. The half-mile stretch of Haligus Road will be closed until November.

HUNTLEY: Work is scheduled to begin to resurface Kreutzer Road from Smith Drive to the railroad tracks. The planned widening of Reed Road between Haligus Road and Cambridge Drive has been pushed back to spring 2010.

GREENWOOD: Work is beginning to repave Wondermere Road between Greenwood and Thompson roads. The $230,000 project is expected to be finished by November.

ALGONQUIN: Hanson Road is closed to traffic until fall 2010 as the village and the Illinois Department of Transportation rebuild it.

The rebuilding will take place in two phases, but the entire road will be closed regardless.

Detour routes will be posted, and include Stonegate Road, Edgewood Drive and Huntington Drive.

Village police will be patrolling the area to prevent motorists from driving on Hanson Road.
