Local woman dies in Spring Grove crash

SPRING GROVE – When Joyce Nevitt was late to pick up her grandson Thursday night and didn’t answer her cell phone, her family knew that something was wrong.

Her ex-husband, Frank Nevitt, said he called the police when she did not arrive. There had been a crash.

He drove to Route 12 and Wilmot Road, saw her crushed Ford Escort, and knew that she was gone.

“She was a very warm, loving, caring person who was always trying to do a little too much,” said Frank Nevitt, who had been married to Joyce Nevitt for more than 20 years.

Joyce Nevitt, 54, of 303 Nippersink Drive in the Pistakee Highlands near Johnsburg, was traveling north on Wilmot Road when her car was struck on the driver’s side by a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling east on Route 12, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

Both vehicles spun and came to a rest in the westbound lanes of Route 12.

The driver of the Trailblazer, Maria P. Morales, 23, of Ingleside also was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry, where she was listed in good condition.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and an airbag deployed in Nevitt’s car.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation by the McHenry County Major Crash Investigation Team, and citations were pending, said Sgt. Karen Groves of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

Joyce Nevitt worked at Follett Library Resources in McHenry and Scot Forge in Spring Grove. Holding a certificate that Nevitt was to receive for five years with the company, her supervisor at Scot Forge praised her as a hard worker and wonderful mother and grandmother.

“She would give anything to anybody if they needed it,” Colleen Schmitt said.

Nevitt is survived by her two children, Maria, 33, and Charles, 21 and two grandchildren.
