El Salvador speaker coming to Ridgefield

By NORTHWEST HERALD

CRYSTAL LAKE – “El Salvador: Hope, Change and Human Rights” will be presented at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Presbyterian Ridgefield Crystal Lake Church, 8505 Church St., Ridgefield.

The Salvadoran community leader, Rosa Centeno, is on a Midwest speaking tour to build awareness of the situation in El Salvador.

For the first time, a left-wing candidate has been elected president in El Salvador. President Mauricio Funes campaigned on a promise to work for human rights and recognize the needs of the Salvadoran poor, according to a news release from a local group called Friends of Chilama, which is sponsoring the presentation.

Centeno is the president of the Association of Rural Communities for the Development of El Salvador. It is the largest rural grassroots movement in El Salvador and coordinates organizing, education, and mobilization in more than 300 rural communities, the news release said. She will be accompanied by Sarah Bishop, an El Salvador coordinator for the U.S.-El Salvador Sister Cities network who is the translator of the tour.

The Friends of Chilama is a McHenry County-based sister city to the Salvadoran village of Chilama.

The presentation is open to the public. There is no fee. Refreshments will be served.
