Detectives to go bald for cop’s sick daughter

By DAVID FITZGERALD - dfitzgerald@nwherald.com

HARVARD – McHenry County Sheriff’s Detective Jennifer Garafol hopes the sight of her bald head will bring a little comfort to 8-year-old Rylie Mogan.

Mogan, the 8-year-old daughter of a Lake in the Hills police officer who has a rare form of cancer, is losing her hair because of treatment, Garafol said. So Garafol and five other law enforcement officials are shaving their heads for money at a special bowling fundraiser for the Mogan family Nov. 7.

Mogan, of Hebron, was diagnosed with desmoplastic round cell tumors, an aggressive, rare form of cancer, two days after her 8th birthday.

The Lake in the Hills Police Benevolent Association has been conducting fundraisers for the Mogan family since the summer.

Now the Lake in the Hills group has teamed up with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department Police Benevolent and Protective Association for a couples bowling tournament Nov. 7 at McGarry’s Bowl in Harvard.

“We know she is starting to lose her hair and is upset about that,” Garafol said. “Her seeing other people get their heads shaved, especially two females, may help that.”

Garafol already has raised more than $1,000 to shave her long, brown hair. McHenry County Adult Correctional Facility Chief Daniel Sedlock said he would shave his eyebrows and mustache if he can raise $1,000.

“We’re hoping that if Rylie is up to it, she can be out there and help shave heads,” Garafol said.

Check-in for the “Scotch doubles” couples bowling event is at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 7. The cost is $40 a couple.

People looking to make donations to the head shavers can send a check made out to the Lake in the Hills Police Benevolent Association to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department Police Benevolent and Protective Association Lodge No. 192, P.O. Box 713, Harvard, IL 60033.

All of the money raised will go to the Mogan family.
