Lakemoor to create administrator post

LAKEMOOR – Village President Todd Weihofen said he planned to appoint a village administrator at Thursday’s board meeting, in spite of resistance from other town officials.
“We’re split on it,” Weihofen said. “Obviously with the economy, people are concerned with adding something on the payroll. But an administrator can pay for itself.”
Since he was elected this spring, Weihofen has insisted that the village would function better if a full-time administrator managed the budget, staff and day-to-day responsibilities. He said he was looking for a “right hand” who possesses grant-writing, management and people skills.
But the appointment of an administrator Thursday would occur almost three months since the village laid off five other employees as a cost-saving measure.
The layoffs were necessary, Weihofen said at the time, because the village was sinking deep into the red.
Last year, the village spent an average of $80,000 over budget every month, he said.
For much of this year, the village had been spending an average of $100,000 over budget every month.
He said his goal in hiring an administrator would not be to add to those negative numbers, but to reduce it.
“We can cut our money on attorney bills,” Weihofen said. “They’re constantly making sure that we’re productive, making sure we’re cutting costs.”
The administrator’s salary or name has not been released.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Village Hall, 234 W. Rand Road.
