LAKEMOOR – Two out of six businesses sold alcohol last week to youth working undercover for police.
The businesses were approached Thursday during an alcohol countermeasures enforcement detail, run by the Illinois State Police and the Lakemoor Police Department. Investigators wanted to gauge compliance with age-related alcohol laws.
“[We’re] ensuring that our liquor-selling establishments are educated and are asking customers for identification,” Lakemoor Police Chief Glenn Leonard said.
Six businesses along Route 120 in Lakemoor were approached. The BP gas station, Rosati’s Pizza restaurant, 7-11 convenience store, and Buddy’s Tavern restaurant all followed the law and refused to sell alcohol to the minors.
However, the undercover volunteers walked out of a Mobil gas station and the Lakemoor Liquors convenience store with alcohol.
“They did not ask for identification from the minors,” Leonard said.
The clerk at the Mobil gas station, Aimen Muhammad Quazi, of 449 Jason Lane, Schaumburg, and the clerk at Lakemoor Liquors, Chiragkumar H. Rami, of 1215 Forums Court, Wheeling, both were charged under local ordinances with unlawful sale of alcoholic liquor to a minor.
The businesses won’t close because they were charged under a local ordinance, not a state statute, Leonard said. However, the Lakemoor Liquor Commission Board has the option of revoking the businesses’ alcohol licenses.
Both men are scheduled to appear in McHenry County Court at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 9.
