Broken ‘Promise’
To the Editor:
Being a mother of twins that are college freshmen, I was grateful for the McHenry County College Promise Program. My husband and I are in the construction business. Both of us have lost our jobs in the past year.
I attended the parents’ orientation in the spring. The big question all of us had was, did they have enough money? We were assured, and I quote, “If every student in our district decided to attend MCC this fall we have enough to cover them for the two years.” My kids signed an agreement to do 16 hours community service, keep a 2.0 grade point average, and take at least 12 to 15 credit hours. Just days before the kids are supposed to register for spring, we find out we have to pay upfront and have a 2.5 grade point average.
Next year, they will need a 3.0 grade point average and 32 hours of community service. There is no way to find financial aid in the middle of the year, let alone the time factor.
So much for average kids and families receiving some help when they need it most.
