Some contested federal, state and local races have come out of the first day to file petitions for the Feb. 2 primary election.

Four Republicans filed to run for the party’s nomination for the 8th Congressional District, held since 2005 by Democratic incumbent Melissa Bean. Barrington residents Dirk Beveridge, John Dawson and Christopher Geissler, and Long Grove Village President Maria Rodriguez, filed petitions.

Bean, a Barrington Democrat, filed Monday to seek re-election, as did 16th Congressional District incumbent Don Manzullo, an Egan Republican, who has held the office since 1993. Neither had primary opponents as of late Monday.

Candidates have until Monday, to file for the primary.

All three of McHenry County’s state representatives – Jack Franks, D-Marengo, Mike Tryon, R-Crystal Lake, and Mark Beaubien, R-Wauconda – filed petitions Monday.

Republican McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren has a primary challenger in Deputy Zane Seipler, who was fired until an arbitrator ruled last week in his favor. Both candidates filed petitions Monday, as did Democratic sheriff’s candidate Mike Mahon, of Lake in the Hills.

Republican incumbent County Clerk Katherine Schultz and Treasurer William LeFew filed petitions Monday. Newcomer Joseph Williams, of Huntley, filed to run for regional school superintendent as a Republican.

Republican primary races are shaping up in three of the McHenry County Board’s six districts. Voters get to choose two candidates from each.

County Board Chairman Ken Koehler and incumbent Lyn Orphal face challenger Donna Kurtz in District 2. All three candidates live in Crystal Lake.

District 3 Republican incumbent Barbara Wheeler, R-Crystal Lake, filed Monday, as did Nick Provenzano, who lost his re-election bid in 2008. Challengers Veronica Armstrong, of Crystal Lake, and Karen J. Tynis, of McHenry, also filed. Board member Ed Dvorak, R-Crystal Lake, is not seeking re-election.

In District 6, which covers the western half of the county, Republican Dan Ryan, R-Huntley, is seeking re-election against challengers Richard Draper of Wonder Lake, Diane Evertsen of Harvard, and Victor Narusis of Woodstock.

The only Democratic candidate for County Board as of Monday is Spring Grove resident Jeff Thirtyacre, who is running for District 4. Incumbent Sandra Fay Salgado, R-McHenry, filed to seek re-election.

Other County Board incumbents who filed as of Monday include District 1 members Yvonne Barnes and Anna May Miller, R-Cary, and District 5 member Tina Hill, R-Woodstock. Also filing in District 5 was John Jung, the former board vice-chairman who lost his 2008 re-election bid.
