Police, schools discuss violence
By The Associated Press
CHICAGO – Officials from Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Police Department plan to work closely with the juvenile justice system to prevent youth violence.
Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis said prevention was hard to measure but that police would focus their efforts on hot spots around the city. Weis said police had prevented three shootings so far this school year. He said that while police often can’t stop the first act of violence, they usually can stop the second one.
Chicago Public Schools CEO Ron Huberman said the district’s 2,000 security guards would be trained to work more closely with students to try to prevent violence.
Weis and Huberman attended a youth violence summit Tuesday that included representatives from law enforcement and the state’s child welfare agency.
