No-wake zone set for Fox River south of McHenry
By NORTHWEST HERALD
FOX LAKE – A no-wake zone is in effect for the Fox River between the Algonquin dam and the Stratton-Bolger Lock and Dam in McHenry, Fox Waterway Agency officials said.
Weather patterns across the United States and the local area have created rising water levels on the Fox Waterway system. The tailwater gauge, south of the McHenry dam, has exceeded 3 feet, the point at which no-wake zones are established, the agency said in a press release. The restriction took effect at noon today.
Lake gauges, as well as a gauge in the Johnsburg area, still remain in the high end of the summer pool range. No restrictions are in place north of the McHenry dam.
All residents along the affected areas should consider investments in the protection of their shorelines. With the ability of the floodgates to move water through the system quickly, erosion will continue to be an issue now and in the future, the press release said. The Fox Waterway encourages bio-engineered shorelines – not seawalls – that not only protect property, but dissipate wave action, provide habitat and improve water quality.
Boaters also should be aware of floating debris and other high-water obstructions.
Violations of no-wake or other boating restrictions during a flood or overflow event are now subject to a fine of not less than $300 or more than $500, injunctive relief to restrain violation, recovery of all damages caused by said actions or inactions, and possible jail time.
