WOODSTOCK – A 36-year-old McHenry woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison Thursday after admitting to trying to pass off a young boy’s urine as her own for a drug test.
Heather A. Derer, of 3103 Riverstream Drive, also was sentenced to 60 days in jail after acknowledging violating her probation in an earlier theft case. Derer had been serving two years of probation for her part in stealing $27,232 from a woman older than 60 in August 2006.
McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather accepted the plea agreement Thursday and ordered a judgment on the remaining $26,159 restitution, which means the victim’s family can try to collect the money from Derer, but repaying it is not a condition of her sentence.
Derer brought a friend’s son’s urine with her to take an alcohol and drug test Sept. 9, Assistant State’s Attorney Jeff Bora said.
“Due to the circumstances of the urine drop, they questioned her, and she admitted it,” Bora said.
He said prosecutors took those situations seriously, partially because such probation violations show an inclination to continue breaking the law.
“The hope is that they’ll be rehabilitated by following the rules of the probation officer,” Bora said.
