MARENGO – Marengo police are conducting a death investigation of a man who was found dead on his garage floor Thursday, but said that he appears to have died of natural causes.

Kris J. Johnson, 58, was found about 12:30 p.m. at his Marengo home at 235 E. Forest St. after a concerned friend called for a well-being check, said Marengo Police Sgt. Rodney Riley.

The Kane County Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the scene because several items that appeared to be incendiary devices, such as a pipe bomb, were found. Their investigation revealed that the items were not dangerous, Riley said.

"They ended up being nothing," he said. "We have no idea what he was trying to make or if he was trying to make anything."

Several small weapons were taken by the department for safekeeping.

The block was shut down during the investigation as a precaution, Riley said.

"There was absolutely no threat to the public," he said.

Johnson lived alone and neighbors told police he was kind of a loner who kept to himself, Riley said. Police are working to contact relatives.

An autopsy is scheduled for later today.
