Willy-nilly distribution
To the Editor:
My 12-year-old granddaughter, who lives in a suburb in Cook County, spent a good part of this year dealing with lymphoma (Hodgkin’s disease), undergoing months of chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments. She is now back in school and has passed the first of numerous check-ups she will need to undergo over the next 10 years.
Because of her medical history and her age, she is part of the population that is at risk of developing complications from H1N1. Unfortunately, her parents have not been able to find anyone who has the vaccine. Her pediatrician, her oncologist, hospitals, drug stores, etc. have told them they do not have it and are unsure when they will get it.
Meanwhile, in Chicago, the vaccine is being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. All you have to do is line up to get your shot.
How ironic. The government that is advising people in high-risk groups (children, pregnant women, people with underlying medical conditions) to get the vaccine is the same government that is distributing it in a willy-nilly manner. I might be able to appreciate that irony if I were not so worried about my granddaughter and my country.
Say hello to the brave, new world of government-run health care.
