Varga bows out of Senate race

RICHMOND – Richmond resident Ed Varga announced that he is no longer seeking the Republican Party nomination for U.S. Senate.
Varga posted the announcement on his campaign blog, citing the crowded Republican field and his recent engagement to be married.
"There is very little chance that my staying in the race would do anything short of split the Republican vote further than it already is," Varga wrote.
Five Republican candidates, four Democratic candidates and a Green Party hopeful have filed as of Monday morning to occupy the seat of Democratic U.S. Sen. Roland Burris, who is not seeking election.
Varga hinted at the possibility of running in the November 2010 election as an independent, "since I never did curtail my beliefs to the strict norms of either political party."
Today is the last day for candidates to file to run in the Feb. 2, 2010 primary.
Varga, who is a member of the McHenry County Board of Health, is an engineer with Varga and Associates, an engineering consulting firm founded by his father.
