D-47 irresponsible
To the Editor:
When unemployment in McHenry County is around 10 percent, people have run out of unemployment benefits, and many workers who are lucky to be employed are having their salaries decreased, taking unpaid furloughs, or just no increase in their salary, we have District 47 irresponsibly giving out pay increases.
District 47 is projecting to operate in a deficit and still thought it was OK to give pay increases. And giving soon-to-retire administrators an extra large bump in their salary just so the taxpayer can pay the inflated retirement benefits is unethical even during good economic periods. Just because you have gotten away with that practice over the years will never make it right or responsible to the people who pay your salaries, the taxpayer.
Donn Mendoza says operating in a deficit can’t be ignored, but District 47 did just that. District 47 board members felt that if corporate America was getting zero salary increases, then they should keep their increases modest.
I don’t call a 6-percent increase modest.
But hey, when you operate with a deficit and you run through all your excess funds, you don’t need to be ethical or responsible. Just go to the taxpayer and ask for more.
