County Board won't put video gambling on ballot
The McHenry County Board rejected an advisory referendum on video gambling, but it will be another month until the county votes on whether to ban it.
The County Board on Tuesday voted against putting the question onto the February 2010 primary ballot, but was unwilling to waive the 30-day review for an ordinance banning it.
Board members voted, 10-13 with one abstention, against an advisory referendum, and rejection of the 30-day waiver came by voice vote. The soonest the County Board can vote on the ban is its Dec. 1 meeting.
The votes came during just under an hour of debate. Video gambling was signed into law in July by Gov. Pat Quinn to help fund the $31 billion state capital bill, but the bill allows county and municipal governments to opt out of it.
