WOODSTOCK – A 27-year-old Algonquin man accused of wielding a knife in a botched drug deal remained in jail Tuesday afternoon with $150,000 bail.

McHenry County Sheriff’s police arrested Frank Cmiel, of 790 Circle Drive, without incident Tuesday morning, said Sgt. Michael Cisner of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

“The investigation will continue,” Cisner said. “Additional arrests may follow.”

Cmiel and Yacoup Baghdadi, 19, are accused of robbing a 21-year-old Lake in Hills man from whom they had arranged to buy 2 ounces of marijuana Oct. 27. Police said Cmiel and Baghdadi met the man near an Algonquin sandwich shop and asked him to drive his car to Scenic and Circle drives.

Once there, Cmiel allegedly held a knife to the man’s throat. The pair took the marijuana, valued at $500, and slashed the man’s car tire as they left, Cisner said.

Cmiel and Baghdadi are charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery. Baghdadi also faces a misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property.

If convicted of the most serious charges, they each could be sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison.

Cmiel is scheduled to make his first court appearance today.

Baghdadi was arrested Wednesday but remained in jail Tuesday afternoon unable to post 10 percent of his $10,000 bail. He successfully asked Judge Sharon Prather on Monday to reduce the bail from $75,000. His next court date is Thursday.

The incident happened west of Route 31 north of Edgewood Drive in Algonquin.
