WOODSTOCK – Numbered plastic balls decided the ballot order Wednesday in six Republican primary races for McHenry County.

Ballot order is decided by the order in which candidates file during the weeklong filing period that ended Monday. But several Republican candidates in five McHenry County Board districts, and both sheriff’s candidates, filed simultaneously at the start of the first day, which requires a lottery to determine ballot position.

McHenry County Sheriff incumbent Keith Nygren will appear first on the ballot over challenger Zane Seipler. The winner of the Feb. 2 primary will run against Democratic challenger Mike Mahon, and Green candidate Gus Philpott in the November 2010 election.

All County Board Republican primaries except for District 4 are contested, meaning there are three or more candidates running for the two open seats. The ballot order is as follows, according to County Clerk Katherine Schultz:

District 1: Yvonne Barnes (incumbent), Anna May Miller (incumbent), Robert Nowak;

District 2: Lyn Orphal (incumbent), Ken Koehler (incumbent), Donna Kurtz, Ellen Brady Mueller, Sandra DePaul;

District 3: Karen J. Tynis, Veronica Armstrong, Nick Provenzano, Barbara Wheeler (incumbent), Craig Steagall;

District 4: Sandra Fay Salgado, Peter Merkel (both incumbents);

District 5: Tina Hill (incumbent), John Jung, David Frederick;

District 6: Victor Narusis, Richard Draper, Diane Evertsen, Daniel Ryan (incumbent), Mary McCann (incumbent).

Three Democratic candidates have filed for County Board: incumbent James Kennedy in District 5, Lori McConville in District 3 and Jeff Thirtyacre in District 4. Woodstock resident Frank Wedig filed to run in District 5 on the Green Party ticket.

State election law gives established parties the ability after a primary to caucus to appoint candidates to fill ballot vacancies before the general election.
