Assessment appeals deadline is Monday

Comments (...)

JOHNSBURG – Monday is the last day for McHenry Township residents to appeal their property assessments.

Homeowners have had since Oct. 10 to appeal property assessments that they believe are too high.

McHenry Township Assessor Carol Perschke said her office had been helping residents with appeals but could not take on any more cases. Instead, residents must submit their appeals directly to the McHenry County Office of Assessment’s Board of Review. Only appeals postmarked with a Monday or earlier date will be accepted.

“The earlier bird caught the worm,” Perschke said.

Assessments are based on one third of market value of a home, and an assessment reduction doesn’t necessarily mean a lower tax bill.
