CRYSTAL LAKE – A mother and child were taken to area hospitals after a man crashed a car into a building and hit several cars in a nearby parking lot Saturday night.
The man, an employee at Fast Eddie’s Full Service Car Wash on Pingree Road, was driving a customer’s Land Rover Discovery about 6 p.m. when he lost control of the car, Crystal Lake Police Department Staff Sgt. Dan Hulata said.
The man crashed into the southeast corner of the Country Inns and Suites hotel, behind the car wash, and then kept driving.
The driver, whose name was not released, proceeded to hit at least two other cars, including a white Ford minivan in which a mother and two young children were passengers, Hulata said.
The mother was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry, Hulata said. One of her children was treated at the scene. The other child was in critical but stable condition when treated at the scene and was taken by Flight for Life to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
A Nissan SUV also was struck. A third car, a Toyota SUV, appeared damaged at the scene, as well, but it was unclear whether it was struck by the driver or damaged because of its proximity to other cars involved in the incident.
The impact of the crash was so great that concrete, bricks, insulation, gutters and other materials from the exterior of the hotel building were spread across the parking lot.
Hulata said the incident and whether charges would be filed was under investigation.
Crystal Lake Police were assisted by Crystal Lake Fire and Rescue and Cary Fire at the scene.
