Puzzled by opposition

To the Editor:

I am puzzled by the U.S. Conference of Bishops opposition to the health care reform bill. I understand the main point of their objection is that under certain circumstances, tax dollars could be used to indirectly pay for abortive services. A low-income individual who would qualify for tax-credit assistance could purchase a health care policy from a private company that might allow for reproductive medical services including an abortion. Even if the insurer segregated the tax-supported portion of the premium payment, it still would support the overhead expenses of the plan. By their logic, a fully insured Catholic, even a priest or bishop, who receives health care from a hospital that provides abortions is supporting the destruction of human life. Why have they not made the faithful more aware of this situation and properly instructed them in their moral obligation in this regard.

The U.S. Conference of Bishops appears to pick and choose its outrage over matters of life, wielding the teaching of the catechism of the Catholic Church as a tool to use where and when they want just as long as it is not directed at them or their life choices.
