Wreck, turkeys block Randall

By BRETT ROWLAND - browland@nwherald.com

ALGONQUIN – Four people were injured in a three-vehicle accident on Randall Road on Friday that spilled 30 frozen turkeys on the busy roadway during rush hour.

Shortly after 5 p.m., emergency crews responded to an accident on Randall Road north of Harnish Drive.

An 18-year-old woman driving a 2004 Cadillac Escalade rear-ended a Dodge Dakota, which then hit a Pontiac Grand Prix, Algonquin Police Officer James Sowizrol said.

The 18-year-old and her 17-year-old passenger, both from Algonquin, were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin. The driver of the Dodge Dakota, a 49-year-old woman from Lake in the Hills, was taken to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock. The 50-year-old East Dundee woman in the Pontiac Grand Prix was taken to Sherman Hospital. None of their injuries were believed to be life-threatening, Sowizrol said.

When the Escalade struck the Dakota, it spilled 30 frozen turkeys that were in the bed of the pickup all over the roadway, Sowizrol said.

While emergency crews attended to the injured, cleared the roadway and picked up the frozen turkeys, Randall Road was closed in both directions for about 45 minutes, Sowizrol said.

Police said the 18-year-old driver of the Escalade was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving without insurance.

It was not immediately clear why the woman in the Dakota was transporting 30 frozen turkeys.
