Peavy takes first step

Jake Peavy's first injury-rehabilitation outing with Triple-A Charlotte went exactly as the White Sox pitcher had hoped.

Peavy pitched three scoreless innings, walked one and struck out five against the Pawtucket Red Sox on Thursday night. He threw 43 pitches in his first start since June 8, when an ankle injury forced him to the disabled list.

Peavy's next minor-league start will be Tuesday against the Durham Bulls. He could increase his workload to four or five innings, and a third minor-league start might be necessary to build arm strength before he joins the Sox in the last week of August or the first week of September.

Pawtucket's lineup included former Sox outfielder Brian Anderson and former Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan. Anderson went 1-for-1 off of the bench to improve his batting average to .259 with four home runs and seven RBIs in 16 games for Pawtucket.
