Rain washes out Cubs

The series finale between the Cubs and Pirates was postponed Sunday after a three-hour, 15-minute rain delay.

No rescheduled game has been announced, although the Pirates visit Wrigley Field again from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1. A doubleheader could be possible on one of those dates if the game remains relevant to the NL Central pennant race.

Both teams took batting practice before Sunday's game, and players lined the field for the "National Anthem" before a heavy burst of rain drenched Wrigley Field. Grounds crew members initially hesitated before pulling the tarp over the field, but a second downpour guaranteed a delay.

During part of the rain delay, pilots have entertained Wrigley's wet fans with thunderous fly-overs. Wrigley is just a few miles north of where Chicago's Air & Water Show is taking place this weekend.

After the rainout, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said he would stick with Ted Lilly for Monday's series opener in San Diego. Rich Harden, who was scheduled to start Sunday, could be pushed back to the Dodgers series at the end of the week, Piniella said.
