HPD warn residents about Internet scams

Posted on January 23, 2012 - 5:24 p.m.

Harvard police are warning residents to be wary of Internet scams.

On Jan. 18, a 41-year-old Harvard resident reported that early January, the victim completed a loan application through an Internet-based cash advance company. The victim later received a phone call from a subject reporting to be a representative of that company.

The resident was advised the loan was in default and instructed the victim to make a payment via gift card.

The incident is under investigation.

The Harvard Police Department encourages all residents to be wary of Internet transactions, to diligently guard personal information and verify all claims before submitting information or money.

HARVARD – Most of the time, Lloyd Roberts is a teacher in Rockford School District 205. Dressed in his blue NASA jumpsuit, on Friday, he seemed like an astronaut to the second grade students of Crosby Elementary School in Harvard District 50.

Three summers ago, Roberts attended NASA’s Space Camp for Educators in Honeywell, Ark. He was one of 600 teachers from around the country chosen for the honor. At the two-week space camp, Roberts and his fellow space campers went through much of the basic training exercises that NASA astronauts go through. They even did a mission under water to simulate low gravity situations.

Roberts, who is friends with Crosby Elementary School second grade teacher Janet Fink, shared his experiences with the students, showed them a video that simulated a moon landing, and talked about the importance of education if students were interested in space travel.

District 50 hosts Administrative Offices open house

Posted on January 12, 2012 - 10:28 a.m.

HARVARD – To celebrate the recent move of the district’s Administrative Offices, formerly known as the Board Office, Harvard District 50 is holding a community open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, before its monthly School Board meeting.

The administration moved into the former Central School building at 401 N. Division after the completion of a seven-month renovation project that installed a new heating and air conditioning system and a new elevator, updated technology and converted the  seven-room school building to an office building.  The design kept elements of the former classrooms in the offices.

“This keeps one of our promises to the community during the referendum about Central School, which first opened in 1888,” said Bill Clow, Director of Community Outreach for District 50. “We told them that we would keep Central School in the district and put it to good use.”
