More jury selection in Gauger case

Posted on August 11, 2009 - 15:44:58

Watch the newspaper and nwherald.com over the next two weeks or so for coverage of Gary Gauger’s malicious-prosecution case.  Gauger was convicted - and later exonerated - of his elderly parents’ 1993 murders on their farm outside Richmond.

Jury selection is continuing this afternoon for a trial in which Gauger is seeking millions of dollars in damages from McHenry County for the more than three years he spent behind bars and for alleged post-traumatic stress disorder.

Much has been written about Gauger's legal ordeals, including:

• Oct. 18: Gauger writes book about his wrongful conviction

• March 5, 2008: TV series to depict area case

• Jan. 31, 2005: Silence drapes Gauger murder cases

• Oct. 27, 2004: Two gang members charged in Gauger murders

Environmental Defenders to host garage sales

Posted on July 16, 2009 - 13:20:20

Satisfy that urge to shop while saving money at the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County indoor garage sales Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25.

The sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 8118 Route 31 in Richmond, across from Richmond-Burton High School.

After many successful years in Woodstock, the sales were moved to the barn in Richmond when the Woodstock Area Recycling Center closed in 2006.

The group also will accept donations of useable items during the sales only, and are looking for antiques and collectibles, household items, books, tools, dishes, pots and pans, dressers and tables, and the like. Small appliances and electronics must be in working order. No clothes, upholstered furniture, televisions, computers or large appliances.

Proceeds from the sale benefit the Environmental Defenders, a nonprofit citizen organization dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the environment.

For information, call the Defenders office at 815-338-0393 or visit www.mcdef.org.

To prepare for the volunteer effort, the troop participated in a training session about pet care and adoption, led by the Alliance for Humane Action and Illinois Animal Rescue.

"This troop's girls are smart, caring young ladies," Rebecca Adler, director of education for AHA, said in a news release. "It's clear that they are committed to this project and to helping some deserving animals achieve a happy life."

The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For information, call the store at 815-578-1530.
