Cary man shoots self in standoff with police

CARY – A Cary man is on life support after standoff with police Sunday afternoon, Cary police and hospital officials said.

Phillip Hedgepath, 53, shot himslf in the head in the driveway of his Pearson Road home, according to a news release from the Cary Police Department.

Cary police responded about 2:30 p.m. Sunday to the 900 block of Pearson Road for a domestic-related incident, the release said. Hedgepath had barricaded himself in the home with a firearm.

Family members had escaped and called the police, the release said.

After a brief standoff, Hedgepath left the house, holding a gun to his head, and after negotiations failed, he shot himself, police said.

Hedgepath was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, the release said. No other injuries were reported.
