Once someone is diagnosed with breast cancer, it takes a team of specialists to care for the patient, and it is typically the surgeon who is the first one to interact with the patient diagnosed with breast cancer.
“The most challenging part of breast surgery is the ever-growing complexity of decision-making, in part shaped by the emerging diagnostic innovations at the genetic level and also by the exciting new developments in surgical and breast reconstruction options available today,” said Dr. Daniel J. Farrugia, fellowship-trained breast surgeon with Centegra Physician Care and medical director of the Centegra Comprehensive Breast Program.
“My role is to help the patient navigate the increasingly complex treatment choices, such as deciding between the breast conservation options and mastectomy for her current cancer, and how new biologically targeted drugs, radiation and breast reconstruction come into play in her overall management plan,” Farrugia said.
The surgeon’s role also is to be the patient’s champion in treatment planning and in coordinating care with the other specialists who are involved in the patient’s cancer care.
“Because of the ever-evolving nature of breast cancer care, I am dedicated to life-long learning and ongoing research to constantly provide the latest treatment and management and thus the best quality of care for my patients,” Farrugia said.
