Are there benefits to having a new mattress delivered, rather than tethering it to the top of your car?
“Absolutely yes,” says Tom Wisniewski, general manager at Verlo Mattress, in McHenry, Crystal Lake and Lake Geneva.
“Our delivery guys are able to check the bed and make sure you have a frame at home that will offer the proper support,” Wisniewski said. “King and queen size beds particularly need frames with extra legs in the middle because of the width and length of the bed. And even when guests in the showroom are asked about their bed frame, most can’t recall if they’ve got a leg underneath their bed. So it’s nice to have the delivery guys look at old stuff when they deliver the mattress and say, ‘Look, you've got a queen bed but you don’t have the leg in the middle for support. We recommend adding it for support so you get a level mattress over time, and you don’t need to replace the mattress sooner than expected because of sagging and improper support.’”
Another point is safety.
“I always say it’s like the Beverly Hillbillies driving down the road with the mattress folded in half tied to the top of their car, which is a safety issue and it’s not good for the mattress,” Wisniewski said. “I’ve been here almost 30 years, and personally I’ve never had one fly off that I tied down, but most people don't have the right vehicle and the right tools to do it.”
Finally, lifting and maneuvering a mattress can cause injuries.
“A lot of people have bad backs and they shouldn’t be trying to get a queen mattress up the stairs,” Wisniewski said.
