If you’re a person who “sleeps hot,” no matter what the temperature may be outside, you provide your own little built-in furnace.
To all those who fall into this category, or who suffer from migraines, hot flashes, muscle and joint pain or night sweats, take heart. Today’s technology-infused mattress pads and toppers, pillows and sheets can help cool down your body heat for a good night’s sleep.
Adding a cooling mattress pad can help increase airflow, and a cooling mattress topper can also improve support. Some are filled with moisture-wicking ingredients like crystal gel fibers while others blend unique materials into the fabric so that they feel cooler against your skin.
Try a cooling pillow for relief from headaches, migraines or hot flashes. There are a number of choices available:
- Pillows made from moisture-wicking fabric can absorb and dissipate heat to keep you cool. Bamboo fabric pillows with cooling properties are quite popular.
- Pillows with cooling gel infused into the cover material, often memory foam which may contain gel fiber.
- Gel pads that you freeze or refrigerate for an hour or longer and place under your pillowcase. Note that inserts that you fill with water are more likely to leak.
- Pillows that feature a cooling gel pad built into the surface.
Cooling sheets made from moisture-wicking fabric similar to that used in athletic clothing pull heat away from the body. Some contain added cooling fibers, such as those that are infused with mineral rock so that they feel slightly cool to the touch.
You can also sleep cooler by selecting a mattress that supports your body and offers increased airflow and breathability. Look for a mattress that dissipates heat through innerspring coils with the open cellular structure of gel foam and latex.
