At 19, Sue Swett was disenchanted with the mall job she was working.
So when her father saw an ad in the local paper featuring a travel school and suggested she enroll, Swett jumped at the opportunity.
“I always loved traveling,” said Swett, who today is owner of Crystal Lake Travel. “My parents took us every year to Florida to visit my mom’s sister on St. Petersburg Beach. I loved geography when I was in school. Travel school just seemed like the answer at the moment. And when I started doing it I fell in love with it.”
Crystal Lake Travel, which opened in 1960, was her first job out of school.
“I started working there in 1976 and then bought it in 1981,” she said. “And I’ve been here ever since.”
Her career choice has allowed Swett to not only indulge her passion for traveling, but also share that passion with others. The agency’s travel professionals quickly navigate the internet, travel the world, and keep themselves trained with educational seminars and trade shows provided by the industry.
Some of Swett’s favorite destinations are Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean.
She has also traveled to Russia, Japan, and several destinations in the United States.
Swett attributes Crystal Lake Travel’s decades of business success to the agency’s attention to the fine details of travel, caring for the traveler’s needs, and the welcome and friendly atmosphere within the office.
A member of the board of directors for the Women in McHenry County networking and mentoring group, Swett won the Women of Achievement Award in 2014 and is a 13-year consecutive recipient of the 1 Million Dollars Sales Award through MAST.
