Fuel lines can wear under harsh conditions

Any vehicle owner can answer the question, “Is your vehicle kept in a garage every night?”

Most probably don’t know if their vehicle has steel fuel and brake lines.

That’s something they can find out. If they do and if they don’t store their vehicle in a garage, they could eventually be in for an unpleasant shock in the form of a time-consuming and costly repair.

For years, Douglas McAllister, owner of Douglas Automotive, has fielded countless questions from long-time customers, as well as new ones seeking his expert advice or a second opinion.

Recently, the owner of Buick discussed his predicament. He’d been told by another auto shop that his car needed to have all the brakes lines and fuel line replaced from front to back. It was going to cost him a big chunk of money – and right around the holidays too! . He couldn’t understand why the brake lines would have to be replaced, especially since the scent of gas was what led him to bring the car in for a checkup.

He asked McAllister to provide a better explanation.

“The reason you typically need to replace all the lines is because they are bundled together as they run the length of the car. As soon as you disturb the bundle, the other lines will fall apart,” McAllister told him. “ It’s actually a good thing your shop caught this before one of the brake lines started leaking because you might have lost some of your braking ability.”

McAllister reiterated that the replacement of all the lines tends to be a fairly time-consuming repair and that is why it can seem a bit on the expensive side.

“Once this repair is made you should have no further problems with this again,” he said. “That’s the good news about it.”
