My car remote won’t work. What do I do?

Ever head through a busy parking lot in the dead of winter, loaded with bags of groceries, aim your remote at your car door, and...nothing?

Your remote isn’t working. But is there anything you can do about it?  Well, yes, there are a few things you can check that just might get you back in business.

First of all, the obvious: check the battery. That’s the number one no-brainer. If that’s not the problem, you can check with a dealership where the service department will make sure the key fob is still sending a signal to your car. If not, it’s time for a new one. Fob, not car, that is.

If that’s not the problem, and it’s winter, see if your lock is frozen. Try to work it manually with the key “on.” If the lock tries to move then it’s frozen.  Use a hair dryer, a match or lighter to heat your key, or a lock de-icer. You can also try a spray lubricant inside the lock.

If the buttons on your remote feel loose or don’t click they may have detached from the circuit board. Open the remote and look. If they have moved out of place, reattach them to the remote’s circuit board, using a tiny bit of solder and tweezer

If the remote STILL doesn’t work, try to open your car’s other doors if the remote won’t work on the driver’s door. If they don’t work it could be a blown fuse that can easily be replaced. If they do work it may be the door lock solenoid. At this point have your mechanic diagnose the problem, which requires moving the door panel to replace the solenoid.

Finally, open and close the driver's door, holding the open/close switch in the locked or unlocked position. Slowly open and close it several times. If the lock works the problem might be a broken wire in the hinge. Again, check with your mechanic.
