It’s winter - you need an emergency car kit

SPONSORED

Driving in winter weather always poses the risk of an emergency road situation. Be prepared in case you find yourself in one. An emergency car kit can at the least, make life easier, and at its best, could possibly save a life.

Your emergency car kit should include the following, advises AAA:

  • A container with sand, salt or cat litter to sprinkle under your tires should you get stuck in ice or snow. Traction mats do the same thing. They are riddled with studs that help your vehicle out of a slick spot when you place them under your tires.
  • A snow shovel could come in handy should you slide into a snowbank. You can find folding ones that fit easily in your car.
  • A snow brush is handy to clean off your car when you are heading off to work or heading for home after a snowy day. Along with your snow brush, keep an ice scraper for your windows.
  • Make sure your window washer solvent reservoir is full since winter driving can leave a mess on your windshield.
  • Always keep a flashlight filled with fresh batteries in case you have car trouble in the dark.
  • A basic tool kit can also come in handy, and jumper cables can be invaluable if your battery needs a jump in cold temperatures
  • Keep extra clothes in your car just in case you find yourself stranded or wet. Pack gloves, warm hat, scarf and blanket and a second set of clothes.
  • Also pack a gallon of drinking water and some non-perishable, high-protein snacks. You might need them.
  • Flares can be a lifesaver to let others know you are in an emergency situation.
  • A first-aid kit could also be helpful if you’re injured and help isn’t immediately available.
  • Keep your mobile phone charged, program emergency numbers into it, and don’t forget your car charger.
