Are you in the midst of planning an upcoming vacation? If you are heading abroad and need to get a passport, make sure to do it sooner rather than later.
Effective April 2, 2018, passport execution fees will increase from $25 to $35, according to the U.S. Department of State website.
That increase will bump the total cost of a U.S. passport to $145 for adults and $115 for children 16 and under.
Of note: the execution fee is only charged to people who apply in person at an official passport agency, such as the U.S. post office or other consular offices.
The $10 fee increase does not apply to adults eligible to renew their passport by mail.
According to Department of State website, passport execution fees are set at a rate that will allow for the “recovery of the costs to the U.S. government of providing the consular service.” according to Department of State website.
A study showed that the latest processing costs associated with passport execution were higher than the current fee of $25, making the increase necessary.
If you’d rather put an extra $10 toward your vacation fund and not an added passport fee, make sure to act now.
