From clutches and satchels to totes and crossbody styles, how do you know what to look for when selecting a new purse?
Finding the right handbag can be a difficult decision, especially with fresh styles and colors arriving with each new season.
Sherree Rothstein, owner of The Clothes Gallery in downtown Crystal Lake, recommends asking yourself these helpful questions to help select the right purse for your lifestyle.
1. What am I going to put inside?
If you always carry the same essential items with you, think about what size purse you will need to fit the things you want inside and ensure your new bag has enough space.
2. How much weight am I comfortable carrying?
How many things you put in your purse also impacts its weight. Rothstein notes that we wear our purses daily, and we tend to put them on the same side of our body.
This can cause straps to be uncomfortable or sliding down off the shoulder.
3. How much investment should I make toward quality?
“For people who don’t change their purses frequently, I tend to recommend that they select a better quality purse,” Rothstein said. “If you’re a fashionista and want to change your bag often, you won’t see as much wear on the bag because you’re not using it as frequently. There are some great quality pleather purses in the $69 to $89 range that still look adorable.”
4. Do I need specific storage pockets?
Some people prefer quick access to the cell phone, keys or office ID badge. When selecting a new handbag, ensure it has enough storage pockets for your go-to items.
5. How safe are my personal items inside?
“We tend to throw our bags somewhere, and if you don’t have a zipper, you can’t feel quite as safe,” Rothstein said. “Look for a purse that has a zipper inside for your wallet and things you feel are invaluable. Zippers are important, and they can be found even in lesser quality purses.”
