People with lung issues such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis and lung cancer often find that their symptoms interfere with their daily activities. Pulmonary rehabilitation can help.
“Patients come to pulmonary rehab to help increase their endurance through exercise, learn more about their disease process to help them manage their symptoms and to decrease their hospitalizations, thus improving their quality of life,” said Jen Beyer, manager of Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Centegra Health System.
During the program they can expect to be involved in group education and exercise, Beyer said. The goal is to have them exercise for 40 minutes. During this time, clinicians monitor their heart rate and rhythm, oxygen levels and blood pressure and their progression toward their goals. Patients must be referred by a physician.
“We work with the patient’s pulmonologist, primary care physician and the medical director to develop an individualized treatment plan,” Beyer said. “We also have registered nurses, exercise specialists, respiratory therapists and a dietitian on staff.”
Working collaboratively with these other clinicians and staff members maximizes the health benefits for those in pulmonary rehab.
The program’s length, depending on the patient’s insurance, is typically three to five months. Patients can attend two to three times a week, with each session lasting about an hour.
“Patients in pulmonary rehab have a better understanding of their disease and how to manage it,” Beyer said. “They have decreased symptoms and improved oxygen levels, especially with activity. They feel less anxious and depressed, have fewer hospitalizations and have an overall increased quality of life.”
