Whether you’re looking for your first job or a new career, McHenry County College has the tools to make your search easier and more productive.
One tool, in particular, Career Coach, is an online service that assesses interests, matches them with related career outlooks, then recommends MCC programs that can lead to those jobs. It’s free to students and community members.
“What’s really nice about Career Coach is that it’s probably one of the most well-rounded tools I’ve seen,” said Dan Ortego, coordinator of Career Services at MCC. “its assessment gives you career traits and strengths, industry areas and from there it breaks it down into specific jobs. It also correlates the jobs with what programs, certificates and degrees that MCC offers to help the person achieve those jobs.
“In addition to that, we’re able to look at job opportunities and trends in McHenry County, Lake County and specific areas around MCC, as well as a broader Chicago area and southeast Wisconsin,” said Ortego.
Career Coach then links to specific jobs on Indeed.com. “It helps streamline your job search and gives you percentiles of job trends, and helps with job interviews by assessing personality traits,” Ortego said.
Since rolling out in October, around 1,000 people have completed the free assessment already. “We’ve had positive feedback and the responses we’ve gotten are that people have found interesting jobs they had never thought of,” Ortego said.
Additionally, MCC’s Hire a Scot program partners with area businesses to help students, grads and community members find local jobs matched to their skillsets.
A workshop on job search strategy is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10 from 10 a.m. to noon in Room A-103.
