Not Using a Public Adjuster for your Roof Damage Claim Costs You Time and Money

If your home sustains damage due to hail, wind, or lightning, you’ll need to file an insurance claim to cover the loss. Who you choose to assess the damage and file the claim can impact how much you successfully recoup from your insurance company.

“A regular roofing contractor may come through a neighborhood looking for damaged roofs,” said Rhett Wilborn, a public adjuster and contractor with Innovative Home Concepts, Inc. “However, they can only meet with the insurance company’s adjuster and point out damage, and that’s it.”

According to Wilborn, only three people can discuss the homeowner’s insurance policy with the insurance company: the homeowner, an attorney, and a public adjuster. “Public adjusters undergo a training program and have to pass an exam, and are licensed through the state,” he added. “The state does a thorough background check on each potential public adjuster, and all licensed public adjusters are regulated by the Illinois Department of Insurance.”

Illinois is one of the only states where a person can be both a contractor and a public adjuster. “Many homeowners prefer to hire Innovative Home Concepts because we act as a public adjuster, and can then do any needed repairs,” said Wilborn. “This allows us to waive the finder’s fee, which essentially offers our public adjuster services for free. It also keeps us involved in and knowledgeable of all stages of the insurance claim process, and allows us to fight for the homeowner if the insurance company tries to deny their claim.”

Another benefit of using a public adjuster is that the homeowner can stay out of most of the claim process. “Our public adjuster will take over the claim, negotiating directly with the insurance company,” added Wilborn. “The homeowner doesn’t have to be as involved, but gets the benefit of a brand new roof.” For more information about using a public adjuster to file your storm damage insurance claim, please contact:
