Are you planning a trip outside of the country? You’ll need a passport for that. Here are three things Crystal Lake Travel wants travelers to know when it comes to their passports:
1. Don't wait until the last minute
If you are applying for a passport for the first time, you will need to make an appointment at a passport acceptance facility. From there, passports can take up to six weeks to process. If you need your passport sooner you may be able to expedite the application process but doing so will cost an extra $60 and restrictions apply. Have a soon-to-expire passport? Renewal times can also take a few weeks. Make sure to plan ahead.
2. Kids need passports too
All children need a valid passport when traveling internationally, even infants. And children applicants under 16 are not eligible to mail in their passport applications. Once issued, passports for children under 16 are only valid for five years.
3. Protect your passport while traveling
Once you have your passport, make sure to keep it safe. Before heading out on your trip, make copies of the main page of your passport and take one with you and leave another with a trusted friend or family member. In the event your passport is lost or misplaced, you will be asked to provide the issue date, issuing agency, passport number and expiration date. With the copy of this information, it will be much easier to replace your lost or stolen passport. Once arriving at your destination, keep your passport concealed while walking around. If you’re leaving it behind, travel experts recommend locking the passport in a safe if one is available.
