Is recycling like second nature to you? If not, there are ways you can make it so. Elgin Recycling offers these tips for helping to incorporate green living into your daily routine:
1. Education is key
Before you can make recycling a habit, you need to know what items can and cannot be thrown into the recycling bin. To that end, check in with a local recycling company such as Elgin Recycling to see what materials they will accept.
2. Stay consistent
Seek out recycling opportunities throughout your day. For instance, if you see an empty water bottle sitting on your desk or kitchen table make sure it ends up in the recycling bin. Unfortunately, enough plastic bottles are thrown away in the U.S. each year to circle the Earth four times.
Are you leaving a room for a while? Make sure to hit the light switch on your way out so as to reduce energy usage. You can also switch out your fluorescent bulbs with energy saving lights which tend to be more efficient and longer-lasting.
Have a stack of newspapers or cardboard boxes to get rid of? Don’t toss them in the trash. Instead, make sure they end up in the recycling bin.
3. Get your household on board
If you have children, early exposure to recycling at home is imperative. Consider placing a recycling bin in their room with a reminder of what items can go in it. Instead of packing their school lunches in brown bags, have your children take reusable containers. As a family, reduce water consumption by taking shorter showers and turning off the faucet instead of leaving it to run while brushing teeth. Most importantly, lead by example. Let your children see you living a more eco-friendly daily life.
