How to bring your indoor style to your outdoor spaces

When the warmer temperatures have you longing to spend more time outside, let your own backyard become the perfect sanctuary for relaxation and entertaining with pillows, lanterns, planters, and tables. Get started with these tips from Yours & Meyn, Simply Designed:

1. Bring the inside out

Don't be afraid to make your outdoor space feel as welcoming as your interior rooms. Candles and holders, as well as throws and pillows in all-weather fabric, can be a great way to do just that.

“Every aspect of the outdoor space has an opportunity to add textiles and textures,” Yours & Meyn, Simply Designed owner Mary Meyn said. “Adding rugs, throws, and pillows are great ways to bring in those textiles and textures.”

Garden stools are also a great way to update your space.

“They have been popular for several years now and they make a great drink table next to a chair or any outdoor seating space,” Meyn said.

2. Light it up

Lighting is important for any space and can be tailored to fit your home.

“If you don't have a shelter over an exterior space I would bring in several jars, planters, candle holders, votive holders — the more the merrier — for an unlit outdoor space,” Meyn said.

Those with a covered area can be creative with extension cords, and covers, and hang plug-in light fixtures over a table or seating area.

3. Dine al fresco.

For outdoor dining, keep the plan as simple or elaborate as you would in your interior space, Meyn recommends.

“Tablescapes are so fun in the summer when you are able to use natural vegetation from your gardens to create centerpieces, place setting markers and so much more,” she said.

For the table settings, use melamine plates if possible, as well as heavy glass instead of plastic which usually won’t knock over as easily.

“When the evenings are chilly in early summer but the sunset is too beautiful to run from, I suggest keeping throws or large wraps draped across the backside of a chair for guests to wrap themselves in,” Meyn said. “It also adds one more texture to your dining space.”
