Remember the classic Disney movie where a mother and her daughter magically switch bodies and have just one day before mom’s wedding to switch back again?
Lovers of musical theater, rejoice. Disney’s Freaky Friday, a new musical adaptation of the classic novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit 1976 and 2003 Disney films, is heading to Raue Center for the Arts’ Williams Street Repertory, in Crystal Lake, Aug. 2 to Sept 1.
Catherine Yore plays mom Katherine Blake. Yore has been performing in musical theater since childhood and travels the U.S. and Canada with her musical improv team Stacked.
“Katherine is such a fun, challenging role, because ultimately, I’m playing two characters: Katherine, as the super-ambitious perfectionist who needs to feel like she’s in control at all times, AND (for the majority of the show) Ellie, who wants nothing more than to feel like ‘she’ has some semblance of control in her own life. I’m excited to explore both sides!” says Yore.
The musical does vary some from the movies, notes Yore.”I think it’s closer to the Jamie Lee Curtis/Lindsay Lohan version, but there are significant variants, such as the fact that the musical revolves around “The Hunt” and Katherine’s wedding. The music is fun and the script is so funny, but there are also beats of complex emotional stakes... it’s going to be an exciting show!”
