WASHINGTON – Ian Desmond's three hits included a two-run homer and an RBI double, and Danny Espinosa and Kurt Suzuki also drove in runs with doubles, helping the Washington Nationals beat the Cubs, 7-3, for their season-high fifth consecutive victory.
CHICAGO – There were the four double plays, one in every inning from the fifth to the eighth. Mix in a wild pitch, an error and a shaky outing from a usually reliable reliever, and that was enough.
CHICAGO – Travis Wood pitched impressively into the seventh inning to outduel Lance Lynn, Nate Schierholtz hit a two-run homer and the Cubs snapped the St. Louis Cardinals' six-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Tuesday night.
CHICAGO – Facing his former team for the first time, Scott Feldman had one of the best starts of his major league career.
CHICAGO – Edwin Jackson continues to search for his first victory of the season after seven starts.
Beth Murphy is a lifelong Cubs fan and the owner of Murphy’s Bleachers in Wrigleyville. She is also the spokeswoman for the rooftop owners who have opposed elements of Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts’ $300 million Wrigley Field renovation plan. They claim his plan, which calls to add a Jumbotron and other revenue-generating signage, would be detrimental to their business and would violate the contract they have with the club. Ricketts said publicly at a meeting of the City Club last week that if his plan wasn’t approved, he would consider moving the team out of the historic 99-year-old ballpark.
Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts created a stir this week when he threatened to move the team if it didn’t gain approval for two proposed signs and a gigantic video board at Wrigley Field. Sports editor Jon Styf and columnist Tom Musick discuss:
CHICAGO – Reliever Carlos Marmol stood in front of his locker in the Cubs’ clubhouse trying to explain another outing that quickly turned bad.
CHICAGO – Second baseman Darwin Barney’s dedication to improving his game doesn’t go unnoticed by his teammates or coaches.
CHICAGO – Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco each had a sacrifice fly in Cincinnati's four-run eighth inning, and the Reds rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Cubs on Saturday.
CHICAGO – Cubs manager Dale Sveum’s confidence in his options at third base has helped produce, in his mind, one of the best combinations at that position in the majors.
CHICAGO – With Matt Garza’s return to the rotation on the horizon, manager Dale Sveum has a tough decision looming.
CHICAGO – Several defensive lapses by the Cubs spoiled a great performance by starter Travis Wood.
CHICAGO – Cubs pitcher Matt Garza wasn't going to let another rainy day ruin his first start in nearly 10 months.
CHICAGO – Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza is back in Chicago after his first rehab start and all indications point to a return that may be only a couple weeks away.
