CHICAGO – A suburban Chicago man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his 4-month-old daughter.

Jonathan Ortiz was charged Friday after the Cook County medical examiner's office determined Sophia Ortiz died from multiple injuries due to child abuse.

South Chicago Heights Police Chief Bill Joyce says the girl was dropped off last Saturday at Ortiz's home. The 23-year-old man called for paramedics Monday. The paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Sophia before taking her to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights.

The girl was revived, however, she died the next day at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn to where she was transferred.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services says it has had no prior contact or prior investigations involving the family.
