Benefits of government

To the Editor:

I think we owe the Republican business owners who’ve been writing to the newspaper a great shout of thanks for waking us up. I personally feel I owe the entire nation an apology for how much help I’ve received in my life.

I actually had teachers who educated me. I’ve needed medical care, and you know what? I didn’t do the operation myself. I’ve had other people keep me healthy and care for me. And some of them needed help to attend school.

I’m sure if Republicans ever do need doctors, they do their own certification process and have no need of licensing boards and other wasteful institutions. I’m sure they inspect their own food, police their own neighborhoods, put out their own fires.

Hey, tax me, I like having a police force. I’m weak. But don’t tax these guys.

But they’re being way too modest. If they really gained their success on their own, without the government, they should take credit for more than building the interstate highway system. They must have issued their own currency and guaranteed its value. They must enforce their own contracts, the way the mafia does, with no need of the U.S. judicial system to back up legal agreements.

And since they haven’t benefited at all from American society, they shouldn’t even have to worry about paying for the lifelong medical care some of our wounded veterans need.

Now, if anybody thinks I’m distorting their words, let’s just say that’s one more thing I’ve learned from them.
