When a Milwaukee judge sentenced former Spring Grove Elementary principal Dan Markofski to a year in prison for sex crimes, many parents asked me who the judge was and when he was up for re-election.
As was noted in stories published around his October sentencing, Milwaukee Judge John Franke presided over the case. Many parents were upset that Markofski was sentenced to a year in prison because the misdemeanor and two felony charges he faced carried a maximum penalty of seven years behind bars.
The Markofski story was among the Top Ten Local Stories (published in today's Year in Review section), so I thought it would be interesting to point out that Judge Franke won't be up for re-election after all – he has resigned from his post as judge, for reasons unrelated to the Markofski case.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wrote about his resignation last month, and says he'll be moving to private practice. Read about it here: http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/34502294.html
