Outdoors report

The Canada goose season in northern Illinois is over, and I hope to have some excellent final numbers next week. You’ll have to head south of I-80 to the central zone to get more honkers; their season runs until Jan. 30. In our area, those pesky flyers are free to block traffic until next September.

Ice fishing report

Snow has blanketed the ice, creating darkness under water. This allows ice fishermen to be a little less stealthy at the trade-off of some tough travel on the ice. Leave a little slush in your holes to block direct sunlight. The light will scare fish from the area. Fish seem to be shallow, with walleyes in as little as two feet. Panfish are good on spikes near weeds. Eyes are taking hook/minnow rigs or jigging Rapalas. Pike are good on tip-ups using smelt.

Illinois Gun Owner
Lobby Day is March 11

The largest gathering of gun owners that Illinois ever has seen is set for March 11 at Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day (IGOLD).

At IGOLD 2008, more than 2,500 sportsmen, hunters, shooting competitors and Second Amendment supporters joined together and marched down Capitol Avenue in Springfield to lobby their legislators, urging them to protect Illinois citizens’ right to keep and bear arms.

The event is sponsored by the Illinois State Rifle Association. This year’s event begins at the Prairie Capitol Convention Center at noon. A reception for attendees and legislators will be from 4 to 6 p.m.

IGOLD organizers have scheduled charter buses to the event. To reserve a seat on the bus, or for more information, go to IGOLD.isra.org.

Whopper of a muskie

Could it be the world’s heaviest muskie? We’ll never know because Canadian angler Dale MacNair released a gigantic muskie Nov. 28 that purportedly measured
57 inches with an astounding 33-inch girth. Any accepted formula for figuring the weight of a released muskie puts the beast in the 70-pound range. MacNair was trolling on the Saint Lawrence River when he caught the fish.

To see a picture of the beast, go to www.google.com and type in “MacNair” and “muskie” and then click on “images” at the top of the page. To put the fish into perspective, known that MacNair is 5-foot-11 and weighs s300 pounds.
